This tennis ball chair was initiated by the exploration of various sitting postures. I aimed to design a chair for use in the domestic arena which allows people to sit comfortably while watching TV and reading books. After conducting a series research, I was intrigued by how children interact with ‘Ball-pool’ where the whole body is immersed and embraced by polyurethane ball with a very much satisfying expression. Also I believe the chair should be environmentally friendly with components sorted by recycle use of material. Hence I started to generate idea from that point, taking concern on durability as well.
Eventually, I decided to adopt the use of tennis ball, due to its rubber strength and unique appearance. The wood frame was made using recycled MDF and covered with Fabric, all from reverse garbage. The upper part of tennis ball was joined by gluing and sewing through using cable and plastic tube. The final prototype of this chair satisfied comfort and playful criteria. |
