The light piece is made out of used jasmine tea bags that have been washed, dried, and stitched together to form the outer skin of the light. The frame of the light, to which the tea bag skin is attached, is made of bamboo. To stitch I have used cotton thread. Using old tea bags makes use of the remainders of a product we use daily, which would usually just be thrown out. When dried each tea bag goes a slightly different shade of brown, creating an interesting aesthetic whether lit or not. Hence a product that is thought of as waste and not aesthetically pleasing becomes the opposite. Bamboo was chosen for the frame as it is more sustainable than traditional timber, and crops can be replenished in a much shorter period of time. Cotton thread was used, as cotton is a natural product and is sustainable. The lighting element will be an electricity-powered halogen, but I am currently investigating using a more sustainable light source, like solar power. The picture I am sending is of the first attempt I made at the light.
