I found this chair abandoned on the side of the road. It was damaged and could not be used as the seat and back was missing, but it was so beautiful I picked it up and took it home without really knowing why or what I was going to do with it. This opened my eyes to all the rest of the "street furniture" in my area- furniture which is not designed for the street but which has
been abandoned by its owner and left out on the street, whether it is broken or
it is fully functional but has simply been replaced by a newer, younger model. I
documented all of these items, and have incorporated their images into my chair, so that it may act as a tribute to all pieces of furniture in this situation. In
addition to this, I have emphasised their plight in rebuilding it to make it a
functional piece of furniture again. While the story of these homeless pieces of
furniture is to be found printed on its fabric, the fabric is woven around
perspex rods, warping the images so that we can never truly understand what they are, as we will never know the history and true story behind such pieces of "street furniture". My chair was a broken but beautiful chair found on the street, and so I have
given it new life as a functional object while paying homage to its history and
recognising the plight of abandoned furniture by including imagery of other "street furniture" in the fabric and placing this behind the new, clean and shiny
element of perspex rods which give the images a mysterious and warped effect. |
