As a result of studying the relationships of people in public spaces I came to one main conclusion "Proximity suggests Intimacy". Couples and people with close bonds sit close to one another touching or facing one another intimately. Those who are not close sit at a commonly accepted distance apart revealed repeatedly in photographic documentation, exemplified in the first image below. I wanted to take this closeness to another level, to show those unconscious of their relationships and proximity, what it actually means. I made a stretchy bath shaped sling that required the two sitters to counter balance each other by leaning outwards on the band. This revealed the reciprocity of the actions of those in relationships, also the front on position forces couples to address one another and engage in eye contact. |
