The Reframe 2006 exhibition showcases the work of students from all schools at The College of Fine Arts (COFA), The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Far from being about lifestyle choice, the works in Re-Frame have been created as an active response to current design practice and the culture of consumption. The artists, designers and craftspeople in Reframe work in a world that is fast-paced, constantly changing, and rapidly dwindling in resources. Through the creation of desires, needs and wants for the 'new' and encouraging disposal of the 'old', ever-increasing demands are being made on our limited systems including processes, materials, structures and services. As a result, protection of the environment and sustainability of the world's resources, including energy, are increasingly the imperative of the twenty-first century. The Reframe 2006 Student Exhibition brief asked College of Fine Arts students to challenge the notion of waste in our consumer driven society. The response is a collection of over 50 works ‘reframing’ materials, manufacture and mass consumption. The student artists, designers and craftspeople are exhibiting works across a variety of media form the traditional art of painting through to digital media to communicate ways of embracing rethinking, reusing, restoring and reframing how we use and do instead of embracing only ‘the new’ as desirable. Concepts of reuse, reduce, recycle; sustainability, eco-design and materiality have been explored creatively and communicated. Four works have jointly been awarded The Dean’s Prize totaling $1000
